Embracing that very premise today validates the oldest, most patronizing anti-equality arguments in modern history.

It is bitterly ironic that this defense emerges in the national spotlight at the very moment a pioneer like Gloria Steinem passes away. Decades spent demanding equal civic standing, intellectual respect, and leadership capability are suddenly threatened by an effort to pathologize the worst imaginable crime into legal innocence. Equal rights cannot exist without equal accountability. When personal responsibility is stripped away under the guise of compassion, women are reduced back to being viewed as legally and emotionally incapable of full citizenship.
